The Headline Numbers
A couple can live comfortably in the Algarve — renting a nice 2-bedroom apartment, eating out several times a week, with good health insurance — for €2,000–2,800/month. This compares to $6,000–10,000/month for a comparable lifestyle in most US coastal cities. The savings are real.
A single person living modestly can get by on €1,200–1,600/month. A couple that owns their home (no rent) can live well on €1,200–1,600/month.

What Costs More Than the US
Portugal is not cheap in every category. Be aware that these things cost more or comparably to the US:
- Electronics (Apple products, laptops, appliances)
- Cars (import taxes push car prices 20–30% above US)
- International brand clothing
- Gasoline (fuel is taxed heavily in Europe)
- English-language books
